La Liga strugglers Celta Vigo are looking to shore up their defensive capabilities by launching a bid for Chelsea man Oriol Romeu, according to Spanish daily Marca.

Romeu is a former Barcelona trainee, and has been at Stamford Bridge since 2011 where he first played under former manager Andre Villas-Boas.

Celta Vigo, who only returned to the Spanish top flight last year, ensured their survival with a 17th-placed finish, but have already lost the influential Iago Aspas in the transfer window.

Striker Aspas has moved on to Premier League giants Liverpool, but it appears his former club are prepared to look abroad for a versatile defensive midfielder, who can also operate in the heart of the backline.

It is understood Celta Vigo will aim to take Romeu on a loan spell initially, before moving for a permanent signing.

Romeu was sidelined for long periods this season at Chelsea due to a knee injury, and has only managed 33 games for the Blues since his move.

He made just one senior appearance for Barcelona prior to his Premier League stint, but does boast a healthy record with the Catalan club’s reserve side.

And with Jose Mourinho already keen on taking Chelsea towards a new direction, with the capture of Andre Schurrle, Romeu’s future could lie outside of London.
