Defending Premier League champions Manchester United are willing to strain their wage budget to the near breaking point as they continue their hunt for Barcelona’s Thiago Alcantara.

The 22-year-old Barcelona midfielder, more popularly known in Spain as simply "Thiago", has evidently made an impression on new manager David Moyes, with the Scotsman thought to be pulling no punches when it comes to seeing the deal through.

Indeed, according to Catalan daily Sport, Manchester United are willing to offer Thiago a lucrative salary worth €4.4m per year just to bring their man to Old Trafford, a pay packet that would see the young Spaniard pocket a lucrative sum.

Added to this is the fact that the Red Devils are primed and ready to trigger Thiago’s release clause, which is believed to be in the region of €18m before taxes.

The Barca youngster made a total 43 appearances for both club and country last season, scoring six goals and providing ten assists.

Included in that count is the coup-de-grace – a hat-trick in the European Under-21 Championship where Spain thumped Italy 4-2 to win the prestigious continental crown.

Thiago’s current deal with Barcelona sees him tied at Camp Nou until 2015.
