Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt has admitted that the club are still looking into the possibility of bringing in experienced right-back Sascha Riether, despite Premier League outfit Fulham having ruined the Ruhr giants’ plans for the German footballer.

Riether, 30, spent the entire 2012/13 season on loan at Craven Cottage from German side Koln. During his stay with Fulham, Riether made a total 35 league appearances, scoring one goal and tallying six assists along the way.

Embedded in Riether’s loan deal is a purchase option for Fulham, which the Cottagers triggered recently, making the German right-back’s stay in London permanent.

"We have been in talks with Fulham, but there’s really nothing new [to report]", Heldt told his club’s official site.

"However, the fact remains that we are still interested in signing the player.

"I’m sure Sascha can easily imagine that too. But Fulham have recently triggered their purchase option for the player. That means something.

"Therefore, we can only wait", Heldt concluded.
