Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho insists the club’s new signing Marco van Ginkel has much to learn about the technical and tactical side of the game, but is confident he can rise to the occasion.

Last season’s Europa League winners recently snapped up Van Ginkel from Dutch outfit Vitesse and, with the Holland Under-21 star having been given assurances about the amount of first team football he will receive at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho is working his hardest to bring him up to speed.

The Portuguese’s judgement is that Van Ginkel still has much to learn – but he will.

"Marco van Ginkel is one of the best prospects. He is not yet like [Andre] Schurrle – close to being a finished product – but he is a player with great potential", Mourinho told his club’s official site.

"Of course he needs to play and he will, because he is a player with great potential and physically he is more than ready.

"He is a natural athlete. By the technical and the tactical point of view of course he is a kid, he has to learn, but I think he is very open-minded and we analysed him for quite a long time.

"The Chelsea scouting department did it for quite a long time and I did it in the last five or six months, and we made a collective decision to bring the kid here."

Van Ginkel will no doubt be trying to impress Mourinho on Chelsea’s pre-season tour and make good on the Blues’ faith in his ability.
