The race for Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld has been thrown wide open after the Belgian rejected the chance to move to English Premier League side Norwich City.

Norwich had agreed a fee of between €7m and €8m with Ajax for Alderweireld, who has just one year remaining on his contract at the Amsterdam ArenA.

However, Alderweireld has been unable to reach his own agreement with the Canaries, leaving the transfer dead, his agent Soren Lerby has explained.

"It was not as if the club does not fit with the ambitions of Toby, we just couldn’t manage to get there", Lerby was quoted as saying by Voetbal Primeur.

Bayer Leverkusen had pushed to sign Alderweireld earlier this summer, but could not reach an agreement with Ajax or the player.

The door is now open for the player’s other suitors, which is a group that includes Liverpool.

The Reds have been strongly linked with firming up their interest in the Belgian, who was on manager Brendan Rodgers’ radar for the majority of last season.

Alderweireld has insisted he will not leave Ajax if the offer is not right, despite feeling ready to take the next step in his career.
