Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that he wants to sign Wayne Rooney this summer, with the Manchester United striker being his priority target.

The Blues have had their opening bid for the 27-year-old turned down by the Red Devils, but are expected to return with an improved offer for a player who is unsettled at Old Trafford.

And Mourinho has addressed the situation openly.

"We want the player. Now it’s up to Manchester United", he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

The Portuguese was pressed whether it is Rooney or bust and replied: "Yes.

"I think that this situation is clear – nothing is a secret any more.

"The official bid is just about a certain amount of money and doesn’t involve players. We made the bid and now we have nothing more to say."

Rooney has returned home from Manchester United’s pre-season tour due to injury and was recently left angered by comments from Red Devils boss David Moyes which suggested he is seen as a backup to Robin van Persie.
