Wayne Rooney is unhappy at Manchester United after Red Devils boss David Moyes appeared to suggest he would be playing a backup role at Old Trafford.

The striker, who handed in a transfer request at the end of last season, returned from the club’s pre-season tour to nurse a hamstring injury.

Manager Moyes then spoke to journalists and appeared to hint that Rooney would serve as a backup to talisman Robin van Persie in the upcoming campaign.

"Overall, my thought on Wayne is that if for any reason we had an injury to Robin van Persie we are going to need him. I want as many options as possible", he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

The same outlet also suggested that Rooney is now "angered and confused" about his role at Old Trafford.

Rooney has two years left on his contract with Manchester United, but the club have insisted that they are not looking to sell the 27-year-old.

The England international was recently linked with Chelsea, as Blues boss Jose Mourinho admitted to rating his talents.
