Atletico Madrid have lost out in their pursuit of Southampton’s attacking schemer Gaston Ramirez.

Los Rojiblancos coach Diego Simeone had been keen to add the Uruguayan to his squad and Atletico Madrid were close to signing the former Bologna man.

However, according to Sky Italia, Ramirez has made it clear that he does not wish to leave Southampton and is hunkering down for a longer stay on the English south coast.

Ramirez joined Southampton last summer from Bologna, with the Saints paying a fee of around £12m for the Uruguay international, who signed a four-year contract.
