Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has revealed that his club missed playing in the Emirates Cup last term and cannot wait to take part in this season’s edition, with it representing a chance of welcome silverware.

The tournament has been part of the Gunners’ pre-season preparations since 2007, but it was not held last year due to the Olympic Games in London.

Wilshere is looking forward to playing in the tournament, which starts on Saturday, against tough opponents such as Napoli and Galatasaray.

He explained to his club’s official site: “We missed it last year. It seemed like something was missing from pre-season.

“It’s a good cup and the fans love it. It’s a chance to lift a trophy too and there are always good teams there. You get that good block of pre-season in and you build your fitness up ready for that.

“We’ve got Napoli and Galatasaray this year so it’s going to be a test. That’s when you really up your fitness.”

The Emirates Cup is a two-day football tournament hosted by Arsenal every year.

Since its inception in 2007, Arsenal have won the trophy three times, with Hamburg and New York Red Bulls being the other two winners.
