Former Paris Saint-Germain player and manager Jean-Michel Larque has told Mamadou Sakho that he must leave the Parc des Princes to progress as a player.

Sakho is thought to have decided to leave PSG this summer if the right offer comes along, after growing concerned that he will warm the bench in a vital World Cup year and as a result lose his spot in the France squad.

The defender has been strongly linked with AC Milan and Liverpool, while Monaco are also believed to be keeping tabs on his situation in the French capital. Indeed, the 23-year-old has no shortage of suitors.

For Larque, it is not just competition which should cause the centre-back to move on though, but also a desire to better himself, with a case of stagnation setting in at PSG.

"The coach has changed but Sakho's situation has not changed. It is getting worse in fact", Larque told French radio station RMC, pointing out that now Laurent Blanc is in charge at PSG.

"Maybe he didn't see this coming. After a remarkable season three years ago, has he improved as he could have? In my opinion, he hasn't.

"It reminds me of [Karim] Benzema, who stagnated before arriving at Real Madrid.

"He needs to leave."

Larque warned though that Sakho must not take for granted a starting spot at another club – and needs to work hard.

"But make no mistake, just because he's going somewhere else does not mean that he will play. He has to question himself again. Maybe he isn't playing because he isn't making the necessary effort."
