Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen is proving his worth off the pitch as well, as club target Christian Eriksen credited his former Ajax team-mate with extolling Spurs' virtues.

It is no secret that Eriksen is being firmly seen as a Spurs player; whether or not it actually happens is an open question.

Indeed, Liverpool may have a say in it, but at least Eriksen has rejected interest from Russian clubs, unlike another of his team-mates Toby Alderweireld.

And with just one year left on his contract, Eriksen would do well to be clear on his future, as he admitted even an extension with Ajax has not been discussed yet.

Vertonghen, who enjoyed two years playing alongside Eriksen at Ajax, had previously urged Alderweireld to get over to England.

And Eriksen was today quoted by Danish outlet BT as saying: "Tottenham are a great club. I know this from Vertonghen.

"It is a good club which is interesting. but there has not been anything.

"If there is a good approach, I can see that as an opportunity to try something new. But if nothing comes, I do not mind staying.

"We'll find out in two weeks. To my knowledge, there have been no negotiations right now either with a new club or with Ajax."
