Arsenal are in talks to re-sign midfielder Mathieu Flamini, who left the club in 2008 to join Italian giants AC Milan.

Following a spate of injury problems, Milan decided to release the Frenchman this summer, opening the door for a potential return to Arsenal.

According to the BBC, the Gunners are in talks with Flamini, who could be signed within the next few days.

The arrival of a 29-year-old injury-prone midfielder is unlikely to quell the disapproval amongst Arsenal fans over the club's current transfer failures.

Despite having a figure of around £70m to spend on players, boss Arsene Wenger has failed to land any world-class talents, picking up only young French striker Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer.

Arsenal have failed with moves for Gonzalo Higuain, who joined Napoli, Luis Suarez, who has stayed put at Liverpool and Luiz Gustavo, who signed for Wolfsburg.

Wenger however looks happy to welcome Flamini back to the club, feeling he will provide extra midfield options.
