Atletico Madrid have made a surprise bid for Liverpool target Toby Alderweireld, according to Het Laatste Nieuws, but Ajax have quickly rejected the same, deeming it below expectations.

A move to Russia with Spartak Moscow for Alderweireld recently fell through despite a proposed €7m deal, after apparent wage demands from the defender that were not acceptable.

Ajax are known to be expecting €7.5m for Alderweireld, who is on the radars at both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

Atletico Madrid's bid is understood be well below €7.5m and it remains to be seen if the Spanish club will return with an improved offer.

Tottenham may have fallen out slightly of that race by chasing Willian and Erik Lamlea, but Napoli also entered the fray yesterday after losing out on Martin Skrtel.

Everton were credited with an interest earlier this summer, but no concrete news has come forth since then.

Alderweireld emerged as a hot property alongside his Ajax team-mate Christian Eriksen, both of whom are expected to move out before the transfer window closes.

The 24-year-old, courted by no less than four Russian clubs at one point, is not averse to signing a contract extension at Ajax should a move not happen this month.
