Powerful Brazilian striker Hulk spoke to Tottenham Hotspur boss Andre Villas-Boas recently and told the Portuguese that he cannot leave Zenit St. Petersburg this summer due to a promise made to the Russian club, a source close to the player has claimed.

Spurs have been linked with making a move for Hulk, a player Villas-Boas knows well from his time in charge of FC Porto. And the London club are not short of the resources to pull off such a deal, with an infusion of funds from selling Gareth Bale to Real Madrid set to fill their bank account.

But Villas-Boas' attempt to woo Hulk to White Hart Lane has failed, with the Brazilian striker set to stay put in Russia, for at one more year at least.

"Chairman Daniel Levy and Spurs head coach Andre Villas-Boas would very much like to see Hulk in their squad", a source close to the player told Russian daily Izvestia.

"The Portuguese coach knows Hulk from their work together at Porto and saw the Brazilian as the equivalent of Gareth Bale.

"Boas personally called Hulk, but the striker said that he will not leave Zenit this summer. According to him, he has promised the leaders of Zenit that he will remain at the club until next summer."

Hulk landed at Zenit last year, making a big-money move from Porto to Russia.

While his time at the club was initially tough, the Brazilian has now settled and begun to show inspired form on the pitch for Luciano Spalletti's men.
