Manchester United's pursuit of Ander Herrera has come to an abrupt halt, with reports suggesting the deal has fallen through despite an apparent agreement over the release clause.

Manchester United were understood to be willing to pay the €36m required to bring Herrera over from Athletic Bilbao.

Representatives of the Premier League champions had even travelled to Spain to the La Liga headquarters to deposit the clause amount.

However, it is believed that a bureaucratic error had delayed the payment, though now it appears that the deal is completely off.

No official reason has been given for the deal falling through, though according to the BBC, it was Manchester United who refused to finally meet the buyout clause.

Reports in Spain, however, suggest that Manchester United did not have certain legal documents from the player's lawyer which forced an end to the transfer.

Regardless, the chain of events has come amid speculation that Manchester United target Marouane Fellaini is very close to sealing a switch to rejoin his former boss in David Moyes

With the Herrera deal off, Manchester United will be almost desperate to land Fellaini, who today handed in his transfer request at Everton.
