Talks over a new contract between Heerenveen and Alfred Finnbogason have hit a brick wall, something which is sure to be music to the ears of English Premier League outfit Newcastle.

The Magpies are keen on the 24-year-old Iceland international and have been mooted as preparing a move for the player when the transfer re-opens in January.

Heerenveen want to keep Finnbogason though and have held talks over extending his contract, which still has two years left to run.

But according to Voetbal International, those talks have broken down, which is sure to be interesting to Newcastle.

Finnbogason was unwilling to extend his deal, despite the promise of a substantial increase in salary, partly due to the minimum €10m fee Heerenveen would have inserted into the agreement.

Newcastle are thought to be big fans of the the 24-year-old, who may be open to a departure when the transfer window swings back open.

It remains to be seen if Heerenveen will try to resurrect talks over Finnbogason's contract.
