Giovanni Trapattoni could make an instant return to international management after leaving his post as Republic of Ireland boss.

Trapattoni parted company with Ireland yesterday by mutual consent, following the country's hopes of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil being realistically ended with defeat to Austria.

The legendary Italian tactician departed along with assistant Marco Tardelli and coach Fausto Rossi, but has already declared his intention to continue on the bench.

Indeed, according to reports in his native Italy, Trapattoni is already in talks with Libya about taking over as the country's coach.

Libya suffered defeat to Cameroon on Sunday, going down 1-0, and have had their hopes of reaching Brazil next year ended.

However, the 2015 African Cup of Nations is now on the North African country's agenda, while in 2017 they are due to host the continent's premier tournament.

Trapattoni has stated his desire to continue coaching and is unlikely to be short of options.

"I want to continue", the 74-year-old said to Italy's news service ANSA.

"Now I'm looking to other possible jobs, without exception."

The Italian took charge of Ireland in 2008 and led the country to last summer's European Championship in Poland and the Ukraine. Trapattoni's charges crashed out in the group stage.
