Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis has dismissed suggestions that Fulham made a £50,000 bid for striker Max Clayton before the transfer window closed.

Clayton, who has been linked with Arsenal and Liverpool over the last 12 months, has refused to extend his contract at Crewe, which expires next summer.

The 19-year-old, considered one of Crewe's brightest talents, has attracted his fair share of attention from Premier League clubs.

But no offer arrived from Martin Jol's men, Davis confirmed.

"I think that was just the agent doing his job", the Crewe boss was quoted as saying by the Crewe Guardian.

"There's been nothing concrete from anybody."

Clayton has recently been booed by Crewe supporters angry at his refusal to extend his contract at Gresty Road, a situation Davis admits he is uncomfortable with.

"I understand the frustrations", he said.

"Boo him if he doesn't try by all means, but just as he enters the pitch is wrong.

"If they want to boo someone they should boo me. I'll take that away from him. Let the players work hard and turn things around."
