Roma could be preparing an audacious approach for Manchester City defender Micah Richards despite interest from Newcastle United and the lure of a contract renewal.

According to Sky Italia, Roma may well be adding to Inter Milan's approach from earlier in the summer, as new coach Rudi Garcia looks to build on a dream start to the season.

Roma are top of Serie A and have yet to drop a single point in seven games.

Richards, on the other hand, has had to compete with the productive Pablo Zabaleta for the right-back position, and spent most of last season on the injury list.

In a World Cup year, the England international could be tempted into a move towards more regular football, even if the Citzens would like to tie him down.

Richards' contract runs for another two years, and it remains to be seen if the winter transfer window will prompt Roma to go for a quick offer.

Earlier this summer, Richards' agent Dario Canovi had revealed Inter's interest in the 25-year-old but denied there had been anything concrete.

And despite the links with Italy, Richards himself issued a statement wishing to continue his career at the Etihad Stadium until the end.

"Manchester City is my club and I’ve never considered playing anywhere else", Richards had said.

Richards is yet to make a Premier League appearances this season, though he did turn out in the 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League and once in the League Cup.
