Napoli are preparing to battle it out with Liverpool for Barcelona right-back Martin Montoya.

The Spaniard's contract at the Camp Nou expires in the summer and, with regular playing time at a premium in Catalunya, Montoya is not expected to extend his deal, paving the way for a free transfer switch.

He has attracted his fair share of suitors, but it is Napoli and Liverpool who are the most serious, according to Calcio Mercato.

And Montoya is likely to have a straight choice between heading to join Rafael Benitez's men in southern Italy, or moving to Merseyside to link up with Liverpool.

Montoya's agent has already explained that his client will not be moving on in January, making a summer switch the most likely option.

However, with the 22-year-old able to sign a pre-contractual agreement at the start of 2014, the battle to grab his signature will begin in earnest.

Other clubs to have been credited with an interest in Montoya include Manchester United, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and Inter.
