Arsenal have won the race for highly-rated 18-year-old goalkeeper Matt Macey, signing up the young custodian, who had been out of contract at Bristol Rovers.

Macey has been training with Arsenal in recent weeks and did enough to convince manager Arsene Wenger to take him to the Emirates Stadium on a full-time basis.

The Gunners will now pay compensation to Bristol Rovers for the goalkeeper.

The League Two club's chairman said in a statement: "Whilst we are disappointed to lose such a talented youngster, he exercised his right to leave the club and we could not stand in his way when this offer came in.

"We wish Matt every success for the future, and hope he goes on to have an excellent career in the Premiership [sic]."

Macey had been chased by a number of Premier League clubs, but plumped for the Gunners after much consideration.

Bristol Rovers meanwhile have vowed to redouble their youth development efforts, boosted by Macey's success.
