Ajax are firmly in the race for AC Milan target Ola John, with coach Frank de Boer making the Dutchman his "number one" priority.

John, who was understood to be offered for sale to Milan by current employers Benfica this summer, has been largely out-of-favour in 2013/14.

The 21-year-old switched to Benfica from FC Twente and managed a productive campaign last time with 22 appearances, but is stuck on just two starts in all competitions now.

John had been a target for Liverpool and Chelsea in May last year when still at Twente, but De Boer is hoping to lure the Holland international back to the Eredivisie.

"He is number one on my list", De Boer told Dutch broadcasters AT5.

"Right now, we do not have a typical winger who can play both on the left and on the right.

"I'd like to see Ola John move to Amsterdam."

John spent two years as a senior with boyhood club Twente and won the Dutch Cup with them in 2011.

He made his senior international debut for Holland in a 1-1 friendly draw with Italy in February this year.
