Montpellier have parted ways with coach Jean Fernandez after giving him just five months in charge, the club have confirmed.

Montpellier were condemned to their second-straight defeat last evening at home to Lorient, which stretched their winless run to seven games.

The disappointing run had many supporters calling for his resignation at yesterday's game but Fernandez, appointed this summer to replace Rene Girard, had been unfazed.

However, Montpellier chairman Laurent Nicollin was today quoted on the club's Twitter feed as saying: "In the interests of the club and the team, I have decided to end [the association with] Jean Fernandez.

"[Assistant coach] Pascal Baills will be the interim manager, and we are looking into possible solutions towards Jean Fernandez's successor."

Fernandez had previously coached at clubs like Marseille, Lille, and even in the Middle East at Al-Nasr and Al-Shaab.

He had been contracted with Montpellier until 2015, and said after yesterday's defeat: "Personally, I do not feel destabilised. Football is not always smooth sailing.

"I put myself in the position of spectators. They are disappointed and I understand them. It is logical that they prey on the coach. I am fully dedicated on the pitch, so we can bounce back."
