Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has attacked his predecessor Rafael Benitez for his treatment of defender John Terry.

The centre-back turned 33 years old yesterday and enjoyed a fine time at Stamford Bridge under Mourinho in the Portuguese's first spell in charge of Chelsea.

Last season Terry played under Benitez, who served in a temporary capacity for much of the campaign, to widespread disapproval from the club's fans.

However, Benitez still guided Chelsea to a Champions League spot as well as lifting the Europa League.

But Mourinho has explained he had to pick Terry up from his experience last season upon arriving this summer.

"I had to remind him of his importance to the club when I arrived because his self-esteem was affected in relation to last season", Mourinho was quoted as saying by Tutto Mercato.

Mourinho has handed Terry appearances in all Chelsea's 15 Premier League games so far this season, while the Englishman has also clocked up four games in the Champions League.
