Arsenal have started to make moves for Marseille midfielder Mathieu Valbuena in an effort to rival Atletico Madrid and Napoli for the classy pass-master.

Valbuena is believed to have decided to seek pastures new in the January transfer window, with heading abroad on the midfielder's agenda.

Atletico Madrid and Napoli have been consistently linked with the 29-year-old however, according to El Mundo Deportivo, Arsenal are now also in the race for Valbuena.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is thought to be a firm admirer of Valbuena's talents and the Frenchman could be attracted to the idea of snapping up his countryman.

Valbuena has made 16 appearances for Marseille in Ligue 1 so far this season, providing five assists for his team-mates.

The midfielder is under contract at the Stade Velodrome until the summer of 2017.
