Fiorentina striker Mario Gomez is nearing a comeback after more than three months out, but efforts to have him ready for the weekend may not work out.

Gomez is currently sidelined with an injury in his right knee, picked up during a 1-1 draw against Cagliari on 15th September.

The Germany international is well on the way to full recovery, even though he is unlikely to feature on Sunday against Livorno.

For now, Fiorentina are happy with the progress shown in his rehabilitation, as the 28-year-old will certainly be hoping to be fit in time for the World Cup.

A club statement read: "Mario Gomez underwent a series of tests [on Tuesday] morning which revealed a significant improvement of his pes anserinus tendonitis.

"The striker will continue his rehabilitation programme over the next few days with exercises on the pitch and in the gym aimed at further strengthening the knee before he returns to full training with the rest of the team."

Gomez's injury came just weeks into his debut Fiorentina season, having switched to Italy from Bayern Munich last summer.

He started well by scoring a brace against Genoa in only his second game for La Viola but got injured in the very next Serie A fixture.
