The Costa Rican has played twice under Meulensteen, who took over from Martin Jol last year, while he has played just once in the last five league games.

Ruiz helped Costa Rica qualify for next year's World Cup and will need to be back among the games to make the national squad.

Betis boss Juan Carlos Garrido is desperate for some attacking impetus in his side and Ruiz has been identified as a fit.

The move is expected to be closed within the next few days, for a player with experience of both Belgian and Dutch leagues.

The 28-year-old forward spent three years with Gent in the Jupiler Pro League and a further two seasons with FC Twente in Holland.

He moved to Fulham in 2011 but only managed eight goals in 75 appearances for the Cottagers.
