Liverpool continue to track FC Porto midfielder Fernando, sending scouts to watch the Brazilian in action at the weekend.

Fernando's contract at the Estadio do Dragao expires in the summer and as such he has attracted interest from a whole host of clubs, including AC Milan, Juventus, Napoli and Zenit St. Petersburg.

Liverpool, in the market for a defensive midfielder this month, are also keen on the player and have already held preliminary talks with his agent.

Those talks might not have led to a quick deal, but the Reds continue to monitor the 26-year-old and had talent spotters at Porto's visit to Benfica on Sunday, according to Portuguese daily A Bola.

Fernando's future at Porto continues to be shrouded in mystery, with talk that he may be prepared to pen an extension with Porto.

That new deal could contain a €15m release clause, which would be unlikely to preclude a potential departure, although that is more likely to take place in June.

Fernando recently acquired a Portuguese passport, something that would smooth a switch to Liverpool should he choose to make it.
