Monaco have confirmed that striker Radamel Falcao has an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The Colombian striker picked up the injury against Chasselay Monts in the French Cup yesterday, having to come off before half-time.

Falcao had scored in the 29th minute of the match, but that was little consolation and his injury left Monaco coach Claudio Ranieri bemoaning the officiating in the game.

And now it seems Monaco and Falcao's worse fears have been realised.

"After the injury on Wednesday, medical examinations have been conducted on Radamel Falcao", a Monaco statement read.

"It appears that the player has an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

"Surgery is needed in the coming days.

"Therefore, doctors will do everything possible to help Radamel Falcao recover as soon as possible."

The news will be a crushing blow to Monaco and also Falcao, who now looks likely to miss the World Cup.
