Nasser Al-Khelaifi has admitted defeat in Paris Saint-Germain's efforts to sign Miralem Pjanic just a day after agreeing a fee for Yohan Cabaye.

The Ligue 1 champions are poised to snap up Cabaye from Newcastle United, but were also interested in Roma's Pjanic, seen as a like-for-like to the Frenchman.

Roma had already made their no-sale stance on Pjanic clear, despite also seeing attention come from Manchester United.

The 23-year-old has blossomed in his midfield role for Rudi Garcia, and Al-Khelaifi today gave up on signing Pjanic mid-season.

"When we spoke with Roma, it turned out that it would be difficult to have him on the market in January", Al-Khelaifi told L'Equipe.

"Roma are fighting for the title with Juventus so it was difficult for them to release one of their most important players in mid-season. Their [fans] would go crazy!

"This is why, in this market, it has been difficult for us to find a good player who may play for us in the Champions League as well. The choices are greatly reduced."
