Lucas Leiva admits he would welcome Nigel de Jong to Liverpool.

The AC Milan midfielder has been linked with moving to Anfield, although any deal is more likely in the summer than this month with the clock ticking on the January transfer window.

But Lucas, who would be in competition with De Jong for a midfield spot if he arrived, insists he would be happy with the former Manchester City man being signed.

"He is a good player and had a lot of good games for Manchester City", Lucas told ESPN Brasil.

"If he comes then that's good for the squad as it is important to have a strong group."

De Jong moved from Manchester City to AC Milan in 2012, ending a three-year stint with the Citizens.

The tough-tackling midfielder has made 69 appearances for Holland at international level.
