The Spain international is expected to undergo further examinations today, while Atletico Madrid's victory took them three points clear at the top of La Liga.

A short statement from Atletico Madrid today read: "David Villa has suffered an elongation/strain – without rupture – (grade I) of the biceps femoris muscle of the back of the left thigh."

Villa has been in sublime form for Los Rojiblancos this season, since leaving Barcelona last summer, and scored 11 goals in 22 league games.

His performances have always kept him on the transfer radars at various clubs and it is believed that Arsenal had attempted to sign him in January, back when he was still at Barcelona.
