Roberto Martinez has backed Everton legend Duncan Ferguson to one day take on managerial reins after being promoted to first-team coach today.

Ferguson will link up with Martinez's squad on a full-time basis, having previously been involved with the Under-18s.

The 42-year-old spent almost a decade with Everton over two spells and was today given his new task, though Martinez claims it was hardly a surprising promotion.

And the Spaniard feels Ferguson can certainly take on the number one job, even as Everton fans excitedly speculate on a future role at Goodison Park.

"He's got the same desire and hard work as was in his playing days," Martinez told a press conference. "It doesn't change.

"Duncan has taken this role with desire and he can achieve as much as he wants. I've seen a huge difference from August until now.

"He was working with the first team on a part-time basis, but it's the right time and there is a real need for him to become permanent. We need his influence."
