Robin van Persie has backed his embattled Manchester United manager, but slammed some of his team-mates for messing up tactics.

The Red Devils were beaten 2-0 by Olympiacos last night in the Champions League, and David Moyes' side have been roundly criticised.

Europe was expected to be a respite from their stuttering form in the Premier League, but instead they find themselves with a tough task at Old Trafford after managing just one shot on target.

Van Persie cut a frustrated figure in Athens, but blamed those around him, telling Dutch outlet NOS: "My team-mates are sometimes occupying the spaces I want to play in. And when I see that it makes it difficult for me.

"So that forces me to adjust my runs, based on the position of my fellow players. And unfortunately, they're often playing in my zones.

"Then I have to change my tactics to suit my team-mates, and play outside my zone. That's a pity."

Moyes, meanwhile, has had to deal with not only criticism, but also speculation that he might be replaced – Holland's Louis van Gaal being one such name.

However, Van Persie added: "He's working hard at it, and so are we. Sometimes we play well, but not all the time.

"We don't have luck on our side. It's easy to point the finger at someone, but I'm not like that. We have to do better ourselves."
