Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke is hoping to have a clearer picture of the club's attempts to sign Ilkay Gundogan to a new contract by next week.

The midfielder, who has missed most of the season due to a back injury, sees his present deal at Dortmund expire in 2015, and has as a result been linked with a number of clubs, including Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Dortmund are desperate to keep hold of Gundogan to avoid yet another damaging departure after Mario Gotze left last summer and Robert Lewandowski is due to leave this summer.

"The renewal of Ilkay Gundogan seems like a never-ending story, but later next week would like the situation to be clearer", Watzke was quoted as saying by Calcio Mercato.

"Obviously we would like to extend his contract", Watzke added.

Dortmund currently find themselves 20 points behind leaders Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and have had to battle on without Gundogan for the majority of the campaign.
