Toronto FC’s latest signing, Jermain Defoe, is confident of England’s chances in the World Cup in Brazil this summer and is hopeful of making it into Roy Hodgson’s 23-man squad for the tournament in South America.

Defoe’s brace on his Major League Soccer debut saw Toronto beat Seattle Sounders 2-1 as the Englishman proved just how sharp he can be up front. Looking to make the cut for the Three Lions, he believes that scoring goals is the only way in.

“I just need to play and score goals. To get on a World Cup squad you have to be playing. Throughout my career people know I’ve scored a lot of goals”, the striker told FIFA’s site.

“I think the most important thing for me is to play and score goals. I think that’s all I can do.”

The 31-year-old is also wary of the group the team are in; drawn against Italy, Costa Rica and Uruguay, England have a not-so-easy journey ahead of them with their first game being against four-time World Cup winners Italy on 14th June.

But the former Tottenham Hotspur player feels that with the current pool of talent, the Englishmen will have a strong chance this year.

“I think England have a great chance because I think there’s a great mix between the experienced players and the young players. It’s so exciting. It’s going to be hard for the manager to pick 23 players because there are so many good players these days”, the English international added.

“There’s a hard first game against Italy, but I think if we get off to a good start then you just never know.

“We need to stick together and take each game as it comes. It’s hard to make predictions because it’s the World Cup. It’s the pinnacle of football and that’s why you play the game – to go there and see how it goes.”
