Birmingham City have agreed a deal to sign Manchester United Under-21 defender Tom Thorpe on an emergency loan for the remainder of the Championship season.

Thorpe, who was the captain of the Manchester United’s 2011 FA Youth Cup winning team, had his previous stint at St. Andrew’s ended when he suffered an ankle ligament injury against Derby County on 1st February.

Thorpe recovered from his injury quicker than expected and played in the Red Devils’ Lancashire Senior Cup tie against Bolton Wanderers.

Birmingham manager Lee Clarke is an admirer of Warren Joyce’s Under-21 squad. He took Jesse Lingard on loan earlier this season and currently has Tyler Blackett and Federico Macheda in his squad. By signing Thorpe he has shown faith in the young central defender’s abilities.
