Robin van Persie was in the stands alongside Holland coach Louis van Gaal at Vitesse yesterday, taking in the Arnhem club's 1-1 draw with Ajax and keeping a special eye on Patrick van Aanholt.

The defender is on loan at Vitesse from Chelsea and is pushing hard for inclusion in Holland's World Cup squad.

And so, at the request of Vitesse goalkeeper Piet Velthuizen, who is good friends with Van Persie, the trek was made.

Van Aanholt explained to FOX Sports: "They are good friends with each other.

"Of course, he is a great player and it was nice that he was there", the Chelsea-contracted left-back smiled.

"No [we didn’t discuss the Holland team]", he added.

"I shook his hand and then I left."

The defender insists though that he was not aware Van Gaal was in the stands with Van Persie, but was happy to have put in a good performance.

"I did not know he was there. After the match, the boys said that. I played a good match, mainly in the first half when I did my job and when attacking I could do my thing.

"During the second half, I played a little less, maybe because Ajax put us under pressure."
