Manchester United are keen to push ahead with a swoop for Freiburg defender Matthias Ginter, despite strong opposition for the starlet's signature.

The Red Devils want to revamp their defensive options for next season and Ginter has made a positive impression upon the club's recruitment team.

Now, according to German daily Bild, the English champions are prepared to do battle for Ginter, a player who has already attracted interest from Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach.

It had been widely thought that Bayern Munich were sure to win the race for Ginter, but the player himself sought to pour cold water on that last month.

"My goal is to play for a big club in future, it is not a secret", he said.

"Bayern? It does not necessarily have to be Bayern."

Ginter has made 29 appearances in the Bundesliga for Freiburg this season, as well as clocking up five games in the club's Europa League campaign.

The 20-year-old's contract runs until 2017.
