Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva is convinced the club are in pole position to win the Premier League and has revealed he was always convinced such days would arrive.

The Brazilian landed at Liverpool in 2007, joining a club that had just competed in their second Champions League final in three seasons.

However, Liverpool slipped out of contention for trophies, despite challenging for the title in 2008/09, and then suffered meltdown as American businessmen Tom Hicks and George Gillett struggled with their ownership of the club.

But Lucas claims he never lost faith, even through the dark times at Anfield, with the Brazilian now believing, along with club skipper Steven Gerrard.

"Now [Gerrard] feels we have a chance. Not just for him, but for everyone else. I feel as well, with my seven years here, I have probably been through one of the worst times of the club – the period where we were not competing", Lucas told LFC TV.

"I always believed that we could get to the stage that we are now.

"I think everyone feels the same and I think that's why the team is showing a lot of confidence and belief that we can go game by game and achieve what we want."

Liverpool have four games remaining in the Premier League this season and, if they can win all four, they are guaranteed to finish as champions.
