Wayne Rooney has stressed the importance of Manchester United playing European football next season.

A spot in the top four of the Premier League and with it a place in next season's Champions League is all but gone for the Red Devils, with the best case scenario now seeing the seventh-placed outfit competing in next term's Europa League.

Rooney admits that the Red Devils want to be playing Champions League football. But the Europa League is a challenge the England international is ready to sink his teeth into.

"You want to be playing in the Champions League but it’s important to finish as high up the table as you can and, if that means playing in the Europa League, then so be it", Rooney told MUTV.

"It’s a difficult tournament [to win] so if we qualify for it we’ll have to make sure we’re ready for that", he added.

Rooney will be aiming to help Manchester United shoot down Everton tomorrow at Goodison Park as David Moyes' men bid to win all their remaining five league fixtures.
