Aston Villa winger Marc Albrighton feels his side showed character to secure a goalless draw during their game against Southampton on Saturday.

The Villans were on the back of four straight defeats in the league and were dominated by the Saints throughout the game, but a resilient performance from the Claret and Blues ensured that they clinched an important point in the race for survival.

Currently 15th in the Premier League, Aston Villa are now five points off a relegation spot and Albrighton is pleased with the way the team performed and refused to give in.

"I think in past weeks we've had games similar to that and we've let go of it and conceded", the Englishman was told the club’s site.

"With 15 minutes to go the main thing was to not lose the game and we achieved that.

"We worked our socks off and we came away with a point that could be absolutely vital.

"Before the game we were looking to win it but that wasn't to be and the main thing is we haven't gone and conceded late on and lost the game”, the 24-year-old continued.

"We stuck together and battled hard for that point."

Aston Villa will now be facing Swansea City, Hull City, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur over the remaining weeks of the season.
