Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has insisted that he is thrilled by the Reds’ progress this season.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have won 11 games on the spin to move five points clear at the top of the Premier League table with 80 points from 35 games.

The Merseyside giants need just seven points from their remaining three games to become the champions of England for the first time in 24 years.

And Alonso, who spent five years at the Anfield club between 2004 and 2009, explained that he is looking forward to Liverpool lifting their maiden Premier League trophy.

The Real Madrid midfielder further added he is happy for the likes of Steven Gerrard and Lucas Leiva, with whom he shared the dressing room during his stint at Liverpool.

“Whenever I'm not on work duty, I keep an eye on the Reds. I'm really excited”, Alonso was quoted as saying by the Reds’ official site.

"It's thrilling what's happening in the city right now. What they are doing at the moment is so admirable, the players, the coaches.

"11 wins in a row is a massive achievement, and they are so close to winning the league for the first time in 24 years.

"So I'm really looking forward to it and happy for the ones I know like Stevie and Lucas, the ones I played with there."

Alonso, who won an FA Cup, a Champions League and a UEFA Super Cup with Liverpool, scored 18 goals in 210 appearances in all competitions for the club.
