Liverpool may well be frustrated in their attempts to sign midfielder Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen, on account of the fact that Bayern Munich hold a buy-back clause.

The Bavarians allowed the Germany Under-21 midfielder to move to Leverkusen last summer, but carefully inserted a buy-back clause, meaning they can re-sign him for a fixed sum.

Liverpool have made enquiries to Leverkusen about signing Can, with some reports even suggesting a deal is some way along the line for the versatile player, who can also operate as a left-back.

However, Bayern Munich hold the ace card and could derail Liverpool's efforts to sign the 20-year-old.

Eurosport, citing a source in their Munich office, said: "We've heard about the rumours.

"He is a big talent and still only 20 years old. He has enjoyed a breakthrough season with Leverkusen. He is quick and technically very good.

"He came from Bayern Munich to Leverkusen last summer for €5m but Bayern may re-sign him for a fixed price.

"Karl-Heinz Rummenigge [Bayern Munich CEO] has already said he wants him back in a few years and said the only reason they sanctioned the move to Leverkusen was so he could get some match practice.

"For that reason we don't believe he'll go to Liverpool. Leverkusen need the consent of Bayern and Bayern doesn’t want to give it."

Can's contract at the BayArena is due to run until the summer of 2017.
