Arsene Wenger is hoping to convince Iker Casillas to leave his boyhood club Real Madrid to join Arsenal this summer.

The Real Madrid captain has endured a frustrating season at the Bernabeu, despite winning the Champions League last month and also collecting the Copa del Rey.

Casillas has become the second choice goalkeeper to Diego Lopez in La Liga and made only two appearances in the entire league season.

The 33-year-old is the first choice for cup competitions, but the Spain captain feels that it’s nearly not enough for a goalkeeper of his calibre and is actively considering his future.

Wenger is looking to exploit the turmoil in the Spanish capital and is hoping to convince the double European Championship winner to join Arsenal this summer, according to Spanish daily AS.

The Frenchman is suffering from a shortage of goalkeepers at Arsenal after the departure of Lukasz Fabianski and Emiliano Viviano. Wojciech Szczesny is the only senior goalkeeper he has in the Gunners squad at present.

Casillas still has three years left on his contract and his buyout clause is €180m. Arsenal are not ready to pay a high transfer fee to Real Madrid, but are willing to provide a fat contract for the Spanish captain.
