Manchester United have made a concrete move to sign Ricardo Rodriguez from Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg.

The left-back has impressed new Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal, who took a close look at him during Switzerland's World Cup campaign; Rodriguez turned out in all Switzerland's games in Brazil, helping the Alpine country to the last 16.

Now, according to German daily WAZ, Manchester United have made a firm move to try to sign the defender from Wolfsburg.

The Red Devils face a tough task securing Rodriguez though, with Wolfsburg's sporting director Klaus Allofs previously having promised none of the club's World Cup stars will leave this summer.

Manchester United have already sold left-back Alexander Buttner to Dynamo Moscow this summer, while Patrice Evra could exit for Juventus.

The English giants have brought in Luke Shaw from Southampton, but it remains to be seen if Van Gaal wants the youngster to make the left-back slot his own.

Rodriguez is under contract at the Volkswagen Arena until 2016.
