QPR midfielder Joey Barton has dubbed Arsenal's new signing Alexis Sanchez "inconsistent" and says he does not know why the club's fans have made such a fuss over the arrival of the Chile forward.

Arsenal completed the signing of Sanchez on Thursday, splashing out between £30m and £35m to sign the forward from Spanish giants Barcelona.

The Gunners managed to beat off interest from both Liverpool and Juventus to get their man, and were understandably delighted to win the race.

Barton though believes that while Sanchez is talented, there are question marks over how consistently he produces on the pitch. The midfielder also claimed Arsenal will need "more" if they are to challenge for the Premier League title in 2014/15.

Barton wrote on his Twitter account: "Am I the only one not overly wetting my pants over Arsenal signing Sanchez? From what I've seen of him he is incredibly inconsistant [sic].

"Yes, on his day he can light up a game. But as anyone who has watched Barca will tell you. His good games are as common as his bad", the former Newcastle player continued.

"Whilst I think it will improve Arsenal. They still need more if they are to challenge for the title. Still think they need a bit of steel."

However, Barton did suggest that a more important role may await Sanchez at Arsenal, in contrast to his role supporting Lionel Messi at the Camp Nou.

"He plays better for Chile where he's the main man than Barca where he's in Messi's shadow. Will he be the main man at the Emirates?"
