QPR midfielder Joey Barton has expressed his surprise that Liverpool did not fight to keep hold of Luis Suarez, following the striker's move to Barcelona being confirmed yesterday.

The Reds have agreed to sell Suarez to the Catalan giants, however there is confusion over the transfer fee, with it being claimed as £75m in England, while throughout Spain and Europe the figure stated is €81m (£64.4m).

Regardless, Barton believes the Reds should have pulled out all the stops to keep Suarez, with the deal appearing to easily go through somewhat early in the summer transfer window.

Barton wrote on Twitter: "Some front two Barca have now with [Lionel] Messi and Suarez. Can't believe Liverpool didn't fight harder to hold on to him.

"No disrespect but when are they ever going to get a genuinely, to World player [sic], who works as hard for the team, as Luis Suarez again?
