Sunderland have tried to break the deadlock between themselves and Fiorentina by improving their offer for left-back Marcos Alonso.

Black Cats boss Gus Poyet is keen to sign Alonso on a permanent basis after he impressed at the Stadium of Light last season.

However, reaching an agreement with Fiorentina has proven tricky and, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, Sunderland have launched another push to secure the Spaniard.

The Premier League side are offering €2.5m plus former Lazio defender Modibo Diakite in order to snap up Alonso.

Now Sunderland are waiting for an answer from the Serie A club.
