Tiago has agreed to remain at Atletico Madrid, signing a new deal with the Spanish champions despite suggestions he was heading for Chelsea.

The Portuguese, who had played for Chelsea in the 2004/05 campaign, was at the end of his contract with Atletico Madrid and had been strongly linked with returning for a second spell at Stamford Bridge.

But Los Rojiblancos coach Diego Simeone has worked his magic and Tiago has stayed put.

The midfielder, who helped Atletico Madrid to win La Liga last term and reach the Champions League final, has penned a new two-year contract with the club.

Tiago told the club's site: "I'm looking to help out in any way I can.

"The club offered me the chance to renew. I felt proud because we had an incredible season, but I thought it was time to close a cycle.

"During these weeks many false things were said about me, but that does not change anything.

"Simeone always left the door open for me and I am now very happy."
